SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Visual Studio .NET or Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 to a hard disk drive, you may receive the following error message:

FrontPage Server Extensions and Setup Runtime files were not successfully installed.

Additionally, when you try to manually run the Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005 Setup program by using the Weccom.msi file on the Microsoft Windows Component Update CD, you may receive the following error message:

Error 1926.Could Not Set File Security for File Drive Name:\config.msi

In the error message, Drive Name is the hard disk drive where you want to install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005. You receive these error messages on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 2 where the system account does not have the Write permission for that hard disk drive.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the system account does not have the Write permission for the hard disk drive where you want to install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, grant the Full Control permission to the system account where you want to install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the left pane of the Computer Management window, expand Computer Management (Local), expand Storage, and then click Disk Management.
  3. In the right pane, right-click the hard disk drive where you want to install Visual Studio .NET or Visual Studio 2005, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab, and then click SYSTEM under Name.
  5. Under Permissions, click to select the Allow check box for the Full Control permission, and then click OK.
