Issue that is fixed by the hotfix package

The following issue is fixed in this hotfix package, but it was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

  • When you type certain established stock symbols in an Office XP document and then press SPACEBAR, the symbol is not recognized by the smart tags feature. This issue occurs because the Stocks.dat and the Stocks.xml files are either missing or out-of-date.

For additional information about other factors that may cause this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

289816 MSN Financial Symbols smart tag does not recognize some ticker symbols

Follow these steps to turn on the options for financial symbols in the smart tag recognizer in an Office XP program, such as Word 2002 or Excel 2002:

    1. Start the Office XP program.
    2. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.
    3. On the Smart Tags tab, follow these steps:
      1. Click to select the Label data with smart tags check box.
      2. Click to select the Smart tag lists (MSN MoneyCentral Financial Symbols) check box, and then click OK.
