SYMPTOMS

On your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (Store.exe) quits unexpectedly (crashes).

CAUSE

This problem may occur if Exchange tries to convert an e-mail message that has an attachment that uses the application/mac-binhex40 MIME content-type. If the mac-binhex40 encoded file is corrupted, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may crash when it tries to convert the attached file to MAPI format.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 3 (SP3) and the August 2004 Exchange 2000 Server post-SP3 update rollup.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is automatically stopped and then restarted when you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
