Article ID: 870566

Article Last Modified on 7/30/2004

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When a user tries to view a Microsoft Office document that is stored in a document library on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site, the document is not converted to HTML as expected, and the user receives the following error message:

Service configured incorrectly

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the port that the Launcher component of the Microsoft Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services uses is blocked by a firewall.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, open a port in the firewall on the computer where the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services is installed.

ImportantWhen you open ports in your firewall, you increase the chance that other programs may gain access to your computer through those ports. Because of this, we recommend that you carefully consider your network security requirements before you open ports in your firewall. You may want to leave the port open only when you use the program, and then close the port when you are not using the program.

To determine the port that you have to open, follow these steps:

  1. On the computer where the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services is installed, start Notepad, and then open the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file that is located in the following folder:

    Drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11.0\Services\HtmlTransform\Bin

  2. Locate the following line, and then make a note of the number that is listed in Number:

    <add key="keyPort" value="Number" />

Note In a default installation of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services, the number that is listed in Number is 8082.
  3. In your firewall program, open a port that is one number larger than the port that is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file in step 2.

For example, if the port in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file is listed as 8082, open port 8083.

For additional information about how to manually open ports in Internet Connection Firewall on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note This procedure only applies to the port that is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file. In a default installation of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services, port 8083 is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.LoadBalancer.exe.config file on the computer where the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services is installed. The port that is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.LoadBalancer.exe.config file is correct.

MORE INFORMATION

In a default installation of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services, port 8082 is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file on the computer where the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services is installed. According to the entry in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file, the Launcher component of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services is configured to use port 8082 for communication to the server that is running Windows SharePoint Services. However, the Launcher component of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services actually uses a port that is one number larger than the port that is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file. Therefore, in a default installation, the Launcher component of the Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services actually uses port 8083, although port 8082 is specified in the Microsoft.Office.HtmlTrans.Launcher.exe.config file. Therefore, this issue may occur if an incorrect port is opened in the firewall for the Launcher component of the Office HTML Viewer Service.

The Office HTML Viewer Service for Windows SharePoint Services provides support for users who want to view the content of documents that are stored in Windows SharePoint Services document libraries, but do not have Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft PowerPoint from Microsoft Office 97, or from a later version of Microsoft Office, installed on their computer.
