INTRODUCTION
This article describes three methods that you can use to access files that are saved in a PC hard drive image. You can use these methods when you want to back up files or to access files by using another program.

Use one of the following methods to access files that are saved in a PC hard drive image.
Method 1: Mount a PC hard drive image
When Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac 6.1 is running on Mac OS X, you can mount a PC hard drive image as a volume on the Macintosh desktop. You can then move files to the drive and from the drive. You can also access data on the drive by using Macintosh applications.
Note Drive images that are created with earlier versions of Virtual PC are converted for use with Virtual PC version 6. You can mount these converted drive images as volumes on the Macintosh desktop.
To mount a PC hard drive image as a volume on the Macintosh desktop, follow these steps:
- Save the files that you want to access in the Window image.
- When you shut down the PC, save the hard drive changes when you are prompted.
- In the Virtual PC list, click the PC that contains drive image that you want to mount.
- Click Settings.
- Click the setting that contains the drive that you want to mount. For example, click either Drive1, Drive 2, or Drive 3.
- Click Mount Drive Now.
The drive appears as a volume on the Macintosh desktop.
Note You cannot mount a drive that is formatted as an NTFS file system.
- Click Cancel.
You can also use the Shared Folders feature in Virtual PC to share files between the PC and the Macintosh host operating system. To share a folder, follow these steps:
- In the Virtual PC list, click Settings.
- In the Current Settings list, click Shared Folders.
- Click Share Folder.
- Click the folder on your Macintosh that you want to use, and then click Share.
You can now save your data files directly to this folder from the Windows PC.
Alternatively, you can use a drag-and-drop operation to share a folder or volume. To share a folder or a volume, drag the folder or the volume from the Macintosh desktop to the shared folders icon on the PC toolbar.
Note If you want to share the volume every time the virtual machine starts, hold down the Option key while you drag the item.
Note When you drag an alias of a folder or volume, the folder or volume is not shared. You must drag the folder or volume itself.
Method 3: Use a drag-and-drop operation
You can also use a drag-and-drop operation to move files directly from the Windows guest operating system to the Macintosh desktop and back to the Windows guest operating system. To do this, drag the files out of the guest operating system window to the Macintosh desktop.
