Introduction
The disk provided with this Application Note contains 8514.VID, a Microsoft MS-DOS 5.0 Shell video driver for computers that have an 8514 video card. Please follow the instructions below to install this video driver.
Installing 8514.VID
- Insert the enclosed PD0488 disk in drive A.
At the DOS prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
copy a:\8514.vid c:\dos\dosshell.vid
Note: If you are copying 8514.VID from a drive other than A, substitute the appropriate drive letter for "a" in the above command. Also, if your MS-DOS Shell files are located in a directory other than C:\DOS, make the appropriate change to the destination path in the above command. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for more information on the COPY command.
You must use the EGA.INI and VGA.GRB MS-DOS Shell files on systems with the 8514 video card. If you are not currently using these two files as your DOSSHELL.INI and DOSSHELL.GRB files, you must do so to take full advantage of the video display and color options available with the 8514.VID driver.
- To determine if you are using the EGA.INI file, view the contents of your DOSSHELL.INI file. If the first line in the file contains EGA.INI/VGA.INI, you do not need to expand the EGA.IN_ file. - To determine if you are using the VGA.GRB file, look at the size of your DOSSHELL.GRB file. If the file size is 4421 bytes, you do not need to expand the VGA.GR_ file.
If you are uncertain if you need to replace these files, it is best that you replace them.
Note: Because the program items, program groups, and all other configuration changes you have made to MS-DOS Shell are stored in the DOSSHELL.INI file, replacing this file will reset MS-DOS Shell back to its initial configuration. After replacing this file, you will need to redefine your program items and program groups.
The EGA.IN_ and VGA.GR_ files are located on Disk 3 of your original MS-DOS 5.0 disks if you have the 5.25-inch format or Disk 2 if you have the 3.5-inch format. The files are in compressed format and must be expanded to your hard drive using the MS-DOS EXPAND command. Place the disk containing these files into floppy disk drive A and type the following commands:
expand a:\ega.in_ c:\dos\dosshell.ini expand a:\vga.gr_ c:\dos\dosshell.grb Note: If you are expanding from a drive other than A, substitute the appropriate drive letter for "a" in the above commands. Also, if your MS-DOS Shell files are located in a directory other than C:\DOS, make the appropriate change to the destination path in the above commands. Please refer to your "Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference" for more information on the EXPAND command.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Additional information on the MS-DOS Shell .INI, .VID, and .GRB files can be found in the "Microsoft MS-DOS Getting Started" guide.
