Cannot Save as Add-in or Template for Previous Version

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 4.0, 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, you cannot save a sheet to the add-in or template file format for a previous version of Microsoft Excel. For example, in Microsoft Excel 5.0, you cannot save a sheet to the add-in or template file format for Microsoft Excel version 3.0 or 4.0.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Excel, you can save a macro sheet as an add-in file (*.XLA). You can also save a worksheet, chart or macro sheet in the template file format (*.XLT).

However, you cannot save a sheet in the add-in or template file format for an earlier version of Microsoft Excel. When you save a sheet to the add-in or template file format, the saved file can only be opened in the Microsoft Excel version in which it was saved. This is by design.

To save a file to the add-in or template file format for a particular version of Microsoft Excel, you must open the file in that version and then save the file.
