SUMMARY

When you run the Microsoft Exchange Server Migration Wizard to move mailbox data to your Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 computer, the migration process may take a very long time. In this scenario, the migration process may appear to stop responding (hang) for up to one hour when the Migration Wizard tries to migrate data from a particular mailbox. Additionally, the following event may appear one or more times in the Application log in Event Viewer: Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeMig
Event Category: None
Event ID: 13003
Date: date
Time: time
User: N/A
Computer: computername

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior occurs if the Migration Wizard cannot log on to one or more mailboxes successfully. If the Migration Wizard cannot log on to a mailbox, the Migration Wizard retries the logon attempt for 60 minutes before it continues to the next mailbox. For example, if the Migration Wizard cannot log on to 10 mailboxes during the migration process, you may experience a delay of up to 10 hours before the mailbox migration process is completed.

File information

The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Date Time Version Size File name
   --------------------------------------------------------------

Update installation information

After you install this update, you can configure both the following behaviors for the Migration Wizard:

  • The maximum number of times that the Migration Wizard tries to log on to a mailbox. The following registry subkey is available to configure this behavior:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\MSExchangeMailMig

    Value name: MaxMailboxLogonRetries
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: numberOfRetriesPerMailbox

  • The time in seconds that the Migration Wizard waits before it retries an unsuccessful mailbox logon attempt. The following registry subkey is available to configure this behavior:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\MSExchangeMailMig

    Value name: MailboxLogonRetryInterval
    Value type: REG_DWORD
    Value data: numberOfSeconds

Note By default, if you do not configure either of these registry subkeys, the Migration Wizard tries to log on to a mailbox 60 times, and there is an interval of 60 seconds between each logon attempt.

Additionally, this update includes the following Migration Wizard-specific event log messages:

Message 1 Exchange Migration Wizard has been unable to open target mailbox 'MAILBOXNAME' after XX attempts. Wizard will continue to open mailbox every YY second(s) for another ZZ attempts before reporting failure.

Message 2 The maximum number of attempts made by Migration Wizard to open a mailbox is being overwritten by registry setting SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Exchange\\MSExchangeMailMig\\MaxMailboxLogonRetries. The Migration Wizard will now try to open a mailbox for XX attempts before reporting failure.

Message 3 The retry interval between attempts made by Migration Wizard to open a mailbox is being overwritten by registry setting SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Exchange\\MSExchangeMailMig\\MailboxLogonRetryInterval. The Migration Wizard will now try to open a mailbox every XX second(s).
