SYMPTOMS
When you use Active Directory Application mode (ADAM) on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based or Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you experience the following symptoms:
- The dedicated directory services for programs that are provided by ADAM may not function correctly. This symptom occurs when you run a third-party program that uses ADAM.
- You cannot create new users in the Configuration naming context by using the ADAM Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) Edit tool.
RESOLUTION
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Restart requirement
You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix. You have to restart the ADAM service after you apply the hotfix.

Important After you install the hotfix, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to ADAM, and then click ADAM ADSI Edit.
- In the console tree, expand
Connection Name, whereConnection Nameis the connection that you created for the Configuration naming context. - Expand CN=Configuration,CN={
GUID} whereGUIDis a unique 128-bit number representing the user. - Expand CN=Services.
- Expand CN=Windows NT.
- Right-click CN=Directory Service, and then click Properties.
- In the Attribute list, locate and then click msDS-Other-Settings, and then click Edit.
- In the Value to add box, type ADAMAllowADAMSecurityPrincipalsInConfigPartition=1, and then click OK.
- Click OK to close the Directory Service Properties dialog box.
Note You may also use the Ldp tool that is available in the %systemroot%\ADAM folder to add the new value to the msDS-Other-Settings attribute.
