Excel: User-Defined Function Category Limit ID: Q84075 The information in this article applies to: Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a, 5.0 Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0 SUMMARY In Microsoft Excel, when you create a user-defined function, you can assign it to a category to make it easier to find. You can assign user-defined functions to built-in categories, or you can created your own. The limits to the number of user-defined functions that you can create are as follows: In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you can add 15 user-defined function categories. NOTE: In version 5.0, there is one less category than in earlier versions of Microsoft Excel due to the addition of the Sample Dialogs category. In Microsoft Excel versions 4.x, you can add 16 user-defined function categories. Any function category that is defined beyond the 15- or 16-category limit will not be accepted and the user-defined function is automatically placed in the "User Defined" category.
