256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SUMMARY

If Microsoft Office programs do not appear in the Journal Options dialog box in Microsoft Outlook, you can either re-create the Journal registry key or change the path of the Journal log files in the registry to resolve this problem.

SYMPTOMS

When you try to turn on journaling in Microsoft Outlook 2002 or in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007, Microsoft Office XP programs or 2007 Microsoft Office system items (programs) may not appear in the Also record files from area of the Journal Options dialog box.

Note To see this dialog box in Outlook, click Options on the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click Journal Options.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the path of the journal files (the Offitems.log and the Outitems.log files) is not correct or is inaccessible.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Re-create the Journal registry key

If you delete the Journal registry key and then restart Outlook 2002, the Journal registry key, together with the Item Log File and Outlook Item Log File values, is re-created.

To delete the Journal registry key, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following key in the registry:

    Outook 2002
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal
    Outlook 2007
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Journal

  4. With the Journal registry key selected, click Delete on the Edit menu.
  5. Click Yes to confirm the deletion of the Journal registry key.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
  7. Start Outlook.

Method 2: Modify both the Item Log File and the Outlook Item Log File values

You can change the path that is in the Item Log File or the Outlook Item Log File values in the Journal registry key to a valid log file and an accessible path in the operating system structure. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the Item Log File and Outlook Item Log File values under the following key in the registry:

    Outlook 2002
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Journal
    Outlook 2007
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Journal

  4. With one of the values selected, click Modify on the Edit menu.
  5. In the Value data box, type the full correct path of each log file, and then click OK.

For the Item Log File string, type a path that resembles the following example:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\offitems.log

For the Outlook Item Log File string, type a path that resembles the following example:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\outitems.log

Note In this step, username is a placeholder for the name or the alias of the user.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit.
  7. Start Outlook.
