This article describes the new features that are included in Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services 1.0 Service Pack 1 (RMS SP1).

RMS for the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 family of operating systems helps safeguard digital content such as sensitive Web content, documents, and e-mail. Users can define who can open, read, modify, or redistribute the content. Also, organizations can create rights policy templates that enforce policies that users can apply to content.
RMS 1.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1) provides support for the following new features.
Support for enrolling the server that is running RMS without server-to-Internet connectivity
In the earlier release, the server that was running RMS had to connect to the Internet to enroll with the Microsoft Enrollment Service and to receive the root server licensor certificate. With RMS 1.0 SP1, you must still request the root server licensor certificate from the Microsoft Enrollment Service. However, you can request it by using another computer that has Internet connectivity. After you have provisioned the server that is running RMS, you can import the root server licensor certificate to that server.
Self-activating clients
In the earlier release, you had to download the machine certificates and the lockboxes for the client computers from the Microsoft Activation Service. With RMS 1.0 SP1, machine certificates and lockboxes are automatically created when the client is installed. The connection to the Microsoft Activation Service is not required.
Support for more client types
In this release, you can use the RMS client together with mobile devices and server services. As an RMS server administrator, you can control whether your server provides certification to these clients when they try to use your services.
Support for multiple language templates
In the earlier release, templates were based on the language setting of Internet Explorer. In this release, you can specify the language that you want to use to create a template through the RMS Administration Web page.
Support for client authentication by using smart cards
In this release, the RMS client can use credentials that are stored in x.509 certificates on smart cards to do the following:
- Authenticate user credentials to the RMS server.
- Obtain rights account certificates (RACs).
- Use licenses.
