SYMPTOMS
You may find that the performance of your Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 computer decreases, and event 9582 ID warning messages and error messages that are similar to the following are repeatedly logged to the application event log.
CAUSE
This issue occurs if virtual memory in the Web Storage System is fragmented. The Web Storage System may experience virtual memory fragmentation during typical operations. Virtual memory fragmentation can cause document management operations such as check-in tasks and check-out tasks to fail.
RESOLUTION
The Web Storage System that is included in SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Service Pack 2a (SP2a) and later addresses virtual memory fragmentation issues by introducing a registry key that you can configure to help prevent virtual memory fragmentation on the server.
To resolve this issue, install the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001 on the server (if SharePoint Portal SP2a or later is not already installed), and then set the Max Buffers
registry entry in the following registry subkey to the value that you want:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem
To do this, follow these steps.
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
- Install the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. For additional information about how to obtain the latest service pack for SharePoint Portal Server 2001, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
312963 How to obtain the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2001 service pack
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem
- On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
- Type Max Buffers, and then press ENTER.
- On the Edit menu, click Modify.
- In the Value data box, type the value that you want, and then click OK.
The value that you set for the Max Buffers registry entry depends on the amount of RAM on the server. To determine the appropriate value to use for the Max Buffers registry entry, divide the RAM on the server by 4,096 bytes as in the following examples:- If the server has 256 MB of RAM, the value of the Max Buffers registry entry is 65,536:
(256 X 1024 X 1024 )/4096 = 65,536
- If the server has 1,024 MB of RAM, the value of the Max Buffers registry entry is 196,608:
(768 X 1024 X 1024 )/4096 = 196,608
- If the server has 256 MB of RAM, the value of the Max Buffers registry entry is 65,536:
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart the server.
