SUMMARY
When you try to update Microsoft Office XP to Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), you receive an error message that states that the expected version was not found. To resolve this problem, install the full-file version of Office XP SP3.
SYMPTOMS
When you (as a network administrator) or one of your users tries to install Office XP SP3, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
- You have Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 1 or Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 installed and updated from an administrative installation point.
- You try to update your Office XP installation from one of the following Microsoft Web sites:
- Microsoft Office Update Web site:
- Microsoft Download Center:
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Use the Office XP Service Pack 3 full-file update
You can use the Office XP Service Pack 3 full-file update to update your administrative installation point or an individual computer (client) that has Office XP installed.

Method 2: Use a new RTM-base level administrative installation point
If you, as the network administrator, no longer want to maintain your Office XP administrative installation point with current service packs and updates, create a new Office XP installation point at the Office XP RTM-base level.
After you install Office XP to a client computer from your new Office XP RTM-base administrative installation point, you can use then use the binary update from one of the Microsoft Web sites that is listed in the "Cause" section of this article.

MORE INFORMATION
Client updates, such as Office XP Service Pack 2 and earlier, could be successfully installed on an Office XP client installation if the full-file administrative update had been installed on the administrative installation point and the client computer had been updated from the administrative installation point.
With Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3, Microsoft changed the way the binary update is authored so that the Office XP Service Pack 3 client (binary) update will install directly over the RTM-level version (10.0.2627) of Office XP.
Because of this change, the Office XP Service Pack 3 binary update will not install successfully on a computer that has either Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed from an administrative installation point and recached on the local computer (client). This problem occurs because Office XP Service Pack 3 must have version 10.0.2627 (RTM-level) of Office XP installed.
Note The Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) full file update will install correctly over an Office XP RTM-level, Office XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) when Office SP3 is applied to an administrative installation point.
