SYMPTOMS
When you try to use your Internet browser to visit the Microsoft Windows Update Web site (at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com), the page redirects you to http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/thanks.asp. The page contains the following message: Thank you for your interest in Windows Update
Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.
The latest version of Windows Update is available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000 (except Windows 2000 Datacenter Server), Windows XP, and the Windows Server 2003 family.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if a non-Microsoft firewall and the Microsoft Windows XP firewall are turned on at the same time.
WORKAROUND
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
Use one of the following methods to work around this problem:
- The system administrator may have made changes to your corporate firewall or proxy server that do not allow Windows Update to operate correctly. Contact your system administrator to make sure that Windows Update is identified as an excluded site on the firewall or proxy server.
- Remove the non-Microsoft firewall.
- Delete the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post PlatformBefore you delete this key, export it to a safe location.

To delete the key, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- In Registry Editor, select the following registry key, and then click Delete on the Edit menu.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform - Quit Registry Editor.
- Restart your computer.
