SYMPTOMS

When a program uses an IP helper function, such as GetPerAdapterInfo, a handle leak may occur. When this problem occurs, the affected program may continue to use an increasing amount of server resources.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the following conditions are both true:

  • Your program uses LoadLibrary calls and FreeLibrary calls to load and to unload the Iphlpapi.dll file.
  • A handle to the TCP/IP driver is not closed correctly when the Iphlpapi.dll file is unloaded.


RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.
