SYMPTOMS

When you try to install any one of the programs listed in the "Applies To" section of this article on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you may receive the following error messages:

Unable to make calendar holiday registry entries

Unable to register tasks, canceling the install wizard.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you do not have permission to modify one or more entries in the registry. Microsoft Picture It! is one of several programs that is designed to be integrated with Microsoft Works. If you do not have Microsoft Works, Picture It! installs the shared component Works Calendar , and then registers the component.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.To resolve this issue, you must set the installing user profile to have Full Control permissions on all appropriate Works Registry Keys.

Note It is a good idea to back up the registry before you edit it.

Step 1: Start Windows XP in Safe Mode

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode, follow these steps.

Note You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in to complete these steps. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing these steps.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process System.ini File
    • Process WIn.ini File
    • Load Startup Items
    You cannot clear the Use Original Boot.ini check box.
  3. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.

Step 2: Modify permissions in the registry

There are up to four registry subkeys to modify. You may not have all four subkeys on your computer. To modify permissions in the registry, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Regedt32.exe, and then click OK.
  3. On the File menu, click Export.
  4. In the File name box, type RegBackup.
  5. Click My Documents, and then under Export range, click to select the All check box.
  6. Click Save to save a backup copy of the registry.
  7. Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Works subkey. If you cannot locate the key, go to step 12.
  8. Right-click the subkey, and then click Permissions.
  9. In the "Group or user names" list, select your account.
  10. Under Permissions, click to select the Allow check box to the right of Full Control.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Repeat steps 7 through11 for the following subkeys:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Works Suite
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Works Suite
  13. Quit Registry Editor.
  14. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  15. On the General tab, click Normal Startup, and then click OK.
  16. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Restart.

Step 3: Stop the Works Calendars Reminder process

  1. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE.
  2. Click Task Manager.
  3. On the Processes tab, click WkCalRem.exe.
  4. Click End Task.
  5. If you are prompted to confirm ending the task, click Yes.
  6. Quit Task Manager.

Step 4: Reinstall Picture It!

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Picture It!.
  4. Click Change.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Reinstall, and then click Next.
  7. Follow the prompts to complete the reinstallation.
