SYMPTOMS

When you send a print job to a printer that is hosted by a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, you do not receive a print notification that the print job has completed.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you have installed the hotfix that is described in the following Knowledge Base article:

828035 MS03-043: Buffer overrun in Messenger service could allow code execution




Note This problem occurs only if the 828035 hotfix is installed on both the client and the server.

This problem occurs because, after you install the 828035 hotfix, the Messenger service on the server is turned off, and the Messenger service on the client computer is turned on.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Prerequisites

The hotfix that is described in Knowledge Base article 828035.

Restart requirement

You must restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, turn on the Messenger service on the computer that is running Windows 2000 Server. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
  2. In the list of services, right-click Messenger, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the General tab.
  4. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, click Apply, and then click OK.
  5. Right-click Messenger, and then click Start.



Note If you turn on the Messenger service, and you are not behind a firewall, you may receive unwanted messages on you computer.
