You may receive an "Access violation c0000005" error message and event ID 7031 and 7011 messages on an Exchange 2000 computer

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer processes a message, you may receive the following access violation error message:

Access violation: code c0000005

Additionally, the following event ID messages may be logged in the application event log: Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
Date: 1/14/2004

Computer: Server Name
Description: The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

Time: 2:02:37 PM

Description: Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for a transaction response from the MSExchangeIS service.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the August 2004 Exchange 2000 Server Post-Service Pack 3 update rollup.
