APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
    • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition

SYMPTOMS

When a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 domain controller or a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 workstation sends a "Query for Primary DC" mailslot message in a Microsoft Windows 2000-based domain, the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server primary domain controller may not respond, and the Windows NT-based server and Windows NT workstation may lose the security channel to the Windows 2000 primary domain controller.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you make a major change in the Active Directory directory service site configuration. For example, this problem occurs if you change the subnet mask in the Active Directory site. The problem occurs because the Net Logon service is busy processing all the notifications that are generated from the subnet and the site change, and the Net Logon service cannot handle the "Query for Primary DC" mailslot message. The duration of the problem depends on how many changes have been made to the Active Directory site configuration, and the problem is corrected when the mailslot message can be processed.

This problem does not occur if the primary domain controller is Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
