Halo: Combat Evolved does not change after an update is downloaded

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a Microsoft Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer game or try to run the HaloUpdate.exe file, you may see that an update is downloaded, and then installed. You may see one or more of the following symptoms:

  • When you view the version number for Halo, it is not changed.
  • When you try to play a multiplayer game, the same update is downloaded again.
  • If you view the text in the HaloUpdate.txt file that is located in your Halo folder, you may see lines of text that are similar to the following:

    01.09.04 01:09:46 executing 'chktrust.exe _halopat.tmp'
    
    
    01.09.04 01:09:46 New process id -381121
    
    
    01.09.04 01:09:46 waiting for chktrust to exit
    
    
    01.09.04 01:09:47 canceling because chktrust returned 1


CAUSE

This problem may occur for any one of the following reasons:

  • Log file or database corruption exists in the Windows\System32\Catroot2 folder.
  • Cryptographic Services is disabled.
  • Other Microsoft Windows files are corrupted or missing.
  • The hidden attribute set is in the Windows folder and in its subfolders.
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and earlier only: The Unsigned non-driver installation behavior Group Policy setting is set to Do not allow installation or to Warn but allow installation.
  • Windows 2000 SP2 and earlier only: The Policy binary value is not set to 0 in the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Non-Driver Signing

  • The Enable trusted publisher lockdown Group Policy setting is turned on, and you do not have the appropriate certificate in your Trusted Publishers certificate store.
