SYMPTOMS

When your Windows Server 2003 DNS server tries to resolve the name of a resource located on a child domain, a recursive query may fail. This issue described in this article occurs in the following situation:

  • Your root DNS server contains a stub zone for a child domain on a second DNS server.
  • The second DNS server contains a stub zone for a child domain on a third DNS server.
  • This child domain on the 3rd DNS server contains the resource that your root DNS server is trying to resolve.

In this situation, the second DNS server does not correctly request the information from the third DNS server, and the query fails.
