SYMPTOMS
A Microsoft ASP.NET application crashes with an access violation in mscorsvr!ArrayList::GetPtr when the application is running on a computer with multiple processors and is using the ArrayList class.
CAUSE
In a pool of objects, the Dequeue function uses the CMPXCHG8B instruction but the Microsoft .NET Framework only adds the lock prefix on computers with multiple processors when the process affinity mask is set to more than one processor. This means that if the process affinity mask of the application changes while the application runs, an access violation will occur when the same object is returned two times. This behavior occurs because the synchronized function that returned the objects from the pool was not really synchronized. The software update that is mentioned in the "Resolution" section of this article adds the lock prefix whenever a computer has more than one processor.
RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 service pack that contains this hotfix.
