SYMPTOMS
When you close a full-screen MS-DOS window, or when you quit an MS-DOS-based program in a Microsoft Virtual PC virtual machine, the virtual machine display may be unreadable.
CAUSE
This behavior may occur on the following guest operating systems if an MS-DOS window is maximized:
- Microsoft Windows 95
- Microsoft Windows 98
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
WORKAROUND
To prevent the virtual machine display from becoming unreadable, open MS-DOS windows without maximizing them.
If the virtual machine display becomes unreadable, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.
Method 1: Resize virtual machine window
Click the lower-left corner of the virtual machine window, and then drag the corner to change the virtual window size. When you change the window size, Virtual PC redraws the window. If this does not restore the screen, go to Method 2.
Method 2: Restart the virtual machine
To restart the virtual machine, follow these steps:
- On the Action menu, click Close.
- Click Shut down

Method 3: Reduce the video acceleration
In the guest operating system, reduce the video acceleration for the display adapter in the display properties. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
- Click the Performance tab.
- Move the Graphics Hardware Acceleration slide control to None.
