To use the Windows Security Update CD to improve your computer’s security settings and to install important security updates, insert the Windows Security Update CD into your CD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions that appear on your screen. Things to do before you install the software updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD

Microsoft recommends that you follow these steps before you install the software updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD:

  1. Save any open documents.
  2. Quit any programs that are running (except the Windows Security Update CD).
  3. Back up any important documents or important files.

How to install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD

When you insert the Windows Security Update CD, the Autorun.exe process determines which Windows operating system is running. The Autorun.exe process also determines the language that Windows is using. If these checks are successful, the appropriate Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page appears for your operating system. If these checks are not successful, a page that contains the appropriate error information appears.

Use the following instructions to help improve your computer’s security settings and to help make that sure your computer has important security updates installed.

Microsoft Windows XP

To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, follow these steps:

Note To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, you may have to restart your computer as many as four times. Step 1: Run the Windows Security Advisor

  1. Insert the Windows Security Update CD. If the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page does not appear, double-click Autorun.exe in the root folder of the CD.
  2. Click Windows Security Advisor.
  3. If you are prompted to install and run Windows XP Consumer CD Cab, click Yes.

The following items appear on the Windows Security Advisor page:

Click this link to print instructions that describe how to manually enable the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) and the Windows Automatic Updates feature.

This area provides information about the Internet Connection Firewall. If the Internet Connection Firewall is not enabled, click Turn on Internet Connection Firewall to enable it. The Turn on Internet Connection Firewall button does not appear if the Internet Connection Firewall is currently enabled. After you have enabled the Internet Connection Firewall and configured the Automatic Updates feature, click Finish to return to the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page. Step 2: Install updates

  1. On the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page, click Install Updates.
  2. If you are prompted to install and run Windows Security Update CD Update Rollup Installer, click Yes.

The Install Updates page contains the following list of recommended updates:

  • Windows XP Service Pack 1
    You must restart your computer after you install this service pack.
  • Update Rollup for Microsoft Windows XP
    You must restart your computer after you install this update package. This update rollup installs the following hotfixes:

    You must restart your computer after you install this update.

To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Windows Security Update CD. If the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page does not appear, double-click Autorun.exe in the root folder of the CD.
  2. Click Install Windows 2000 SP4.
  3. If a File Download dialog box appears, click Run this program from its current location, and then click OK to start the installation of Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
  4. If you are prompted to install and run Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, click Yes.
  5. Follow the remaining instructions to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4.
  6. When the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Setup Wizard has completed successfully, click Finish to restart the computer.
  7. When the computer has restarted, return to the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page of the Windows Security Update CD.

Step 2: Install Update MS03-039

  1. On the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page, click Install Update MS03-039.
  2. If a File Download dialog box appears, click Run this program from its current location, and then click OK.
  3. If you are prompted to install and run Windows 2000 Hotfix (SP5) KB824146, click Yes.
  4. Follow the remaining instructions to install KB824146.
  5. When the Windows 2000 KB824146 Setup Wizard has completed successfully, click Finish to restart the computer.
  6. When the computer has restarted, return to the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page of the Windows Security Update CD.

Microsoft Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition

To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, follow these steps.

Note To install the updates that are on the Windows Security Update CD, you may have to restart your Windows 98 or your Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer as many as two times. You may have to restart your Windows Millennium Edition-based computer as many as three times. Step 1: Locate the installation page

  1. Insert the Windows Security Update CD. If the Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page does not appear, double-click Autorun.exe in the root folder of the CD.
  2. Click Proceed to Install Page.
  3. View the contents of the End User License Agreement, click I Agree, and then click Next.

The Welcome to the Windows Security Update CD page appears. Step 2: Install updates The following updates are installed by the Windows Security Update CD:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • DirectX 9.0b
  • Windows Media Player 7.1 in Windows 98
  • Windows Media Player 9 in Windows 98 Second Edition or in Windows Millennium Edition
  • MDAC 2.8
  • The security hotfixes that correspond to each operating system

When you click Install Updates, the W9xsetup.exe program performs the following tasks:

  • W9xsetup.exe determines whether sufficient hard disk space is available for the installation of the updates.
    • Windows 98 requires 300 megabytes (MB) free hard disk space.
    • Windows 98 Second Edition requires 350 MB free hard disk space.
    • Windows Millennium Edition requires 400 MB free hard disk space.
    If sufficient hard disk space is not available, you receive the following message: Setup has detected that you need more free disk space to install this update. To learn how to free up disk space, click here. After you have freed up disk space, reinsert this CD to re-start the installation process.
  • W9xsetup.exe determines the operating system that is running, and then starts the appropriate INF file.

    Note A separate INF file is used for each Windows operating system. The INF file controls the updates to install, the order that those updates are installed in, and the restart requirements for that particular operating system.

To install these updates:

  1. Click Install Updates.
  2. If you a File Download dialog box appears, click Run this program from its current location, and then click OK.
  3. If you are prompted to install and run Windows Security Update CD, click Yes.

The Setup program installs the update components. The Setup program automatically restarts. When the computer restarts, log on to the computer. The Setup program finishes the update of the operating system settings, and then continues to install additional updates. Step 3: Complete the installation When the Setup program has completed the installation of the updates from the Windows Security Update CD, the Thank you for taking the time to install these updates page appears. This page contains the following items:

  • A Please Visit Windows Update to Complete the Installation link.
    Click this link to visit the Windows Update Web site to obtain the latest updates for your computer.
  • A Getting Help and Support area.

Troubleshooting

You may experience one or more of the following symptoms when you try to install the updates from the Windows Security Update CD:

Windows stops responding (hangs) during the final restart operation

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • Programs that run in the background prevent Windows from restarting.
  • The fast shutdown feature is enabled in Windows 98.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows in Safe mode. To do this, press F8 when the computer starts. On the startup menu that appears, use the ARROW keys to select the Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.
  2. If you are running Windows 98, disable the fast shutdown feature. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  3. Temporarily disable third-party programs that run in the background. To do this, use the Msconfig tool. Msconfig is included in Windows 98, in Windows 98 Second Edition, in Windows Millennium Edition, and in Windows XP. To disable startup programs, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Startup tab, and then click to clear the check boxes of the programs that you want to prevent from running when Windows starts.

      Important If you disable your antivirus program or your firewall program, Microsoft recommends that you disconnect your computer from the network and from the Internet. Microsoft recommends that you re-enable your antivirus program and your firewall program when you have finished troubleshooting this issue.
    3. Click OK, and then restart your computer when prompted.
  4. Follow the steps in the Windows Security Update CD to install the updates.
  5. When the updates are installed successfully, and when Windows has restarted successfully, re-enable the third programs that run in the background.

You receive an "Unable to open <filename> on the CD" error message after Windows restarts

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • The CD is removed from the CD-ROM drive when Windows first restarts.
  • A "popup blocker" program is running in the background.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the CD remains in the CD-ROM drive until all the updates on the Windows Security Update CD are successfully installed.
  2. Click OK on the error message if it appears. Certain CD-ROM drives may take several moments to initialize.
  3. If a "popup blocker" program is running, temporarily disable it. After all the updates on the Windows Security Update CD are installed successfully, re-enable the "popup blocker" program.

The Windows Update Web site presents updates that you have already installed

This issue typically occurs only with updates for Windows Media Player. To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Re-install the updates from the Windows Update Web site.
  2. Verify that the file versions have been updated after you install the updates from the Windows Update Web site.

Windows runs slowly after you install updates

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • A program such as an antivirus program is running in the background during the installation of the updates from the Windows Security Update CD.
  • Windows operating system files are corrupted.
  • A computer virus is running on the computer.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Restart Windows in Safe mode. If Windows performance is improved in Safe mode, this issue may be caused by a third-party program that runs in the background.
  2. Temporarily disable third-party programs that run in the background. To do this, use the Msconfig tool. Msconfig is included in Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, and in Windows XP. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Click the Startup tab, and then click to clear the check boxes of the programs that you want to prevent from running when Windows starts.

      Important If you disable your antivirus program or your firewall program, Microsoft recommends that you disconnect your computer from the network and from the Internet. Microsoft recommends that you re-enable your antivirus program and your firewall program when you have finished troubleshooting this issue.
    3. Click OK, and then restart your computer when prompted.
  3. Determine whether the updates from the Windows Security Update CD were installed successfully. If the updates were not installed successfully, one or more files may be corrupted. In this scenario, start Windows with a minimal set of drivers (a procedure that is also known as a "clean boot"), and then reinstall the updates from the Windows Security Update CD. Windows does not successfully resume from a suspended state

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • The computer's BIOS is outdated.
  • The display adapter driver is outdated or incorrect.
  • A third-party program that is running prevents Windows from resuming.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that your computer's BIOS version is up-to-date. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type msinfo32 in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. In the left pane, click System Summary.
    3. In the right pane, note the value for the BIOS Version item.
    4. Contact your computer manufacturer to determine whether a newer BIOS version is available.
  2. Use the Msconfig tool to temporarily disable third-party programs that run in the background when Windows starts. If Windows now successfully resumes from standby, this issue may be caused by the program that you disabled.

    Important If you disable your antivirus program or your firewall program, Microsoft recommends that you disconnect your computer from the network and from the Internet. Microsoft recommends that you re-enable your antivirus program and your firewall program when you have finished troubleshooting this issue.
  3. Temporarily remove the current display driver and install the Basic VGA driver. If Windows now successfully resumes from standby, this issue may be caused by your display driver. In this scenario, update your display adapter to use the latest driver.

Windows does not successfully shut down after you install updates

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • Programs that run in the background prevent Windows from shutting down.
  • The fast shutdown feature is enabled in Windows 98.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows in Safe mode. To do this, press F8 when the computer starts. On the startup menu that appears, use the ARROW keys to select the Safe mode option, and then press ENTER.

  4. Retry the update installation. When the updates are installed successfully, and when Windows shuts down successfully, re-enable the third programs that run in the background.

Windows stops responding (freezes) after you install Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • Programs that run in the background cause Windows to stop responding.


Note Typically, this issue occurs when an antivirus program or a firewall program is running during the installation of Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player.

  • The computer has multiple CD-ROM drives installed.

To troubleshoot this issue, start Windows with a minimal set of drivers (a procedure that is also known as a "clean boot"), and then reinstall Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. The Setup program does not have sufficient disk space or sufficient memory resources to install the updates

This issue may occur if one or both of the following conditions are true:

  • Many programs are running in the background when you try to install the updates from the Windows Security Update CD.
  • The hard disk where Windows is installed does not have sufficient hard disk space to install the updates from the Windows Security CD.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that the hard disk where Windows is installed has sufficient hard disk space available.

You receive Windows Update Error: 0x800A138F after you install a security update

This issue may occur if the computer's date is incorrect. To troubleshoot this issue, verify that your computer's date and time are configured correctly.

Windows unexpectedly restarts when a remote computer accesses a share

This issue may occur if one or more of the following conditions are true:

  • A firewall program is running.
  • A networking protocol is corrupted.
  • The network adapter driver is corrupted.
  • The network adapter is defective.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Determine whether you experience this issue with only some shares. To do this, access different shares to see whether the problem occurs again. If the problem only occurs with certain shares, re-create those shares, and then verify that the correct permissions are assigned to those shares.
  2. Test basic network connectivity by using the Packet Internet Groper (Ping.exe) command. Try to ping the computer by using its IP address, and then try to ping the computer by using its host name.
  3. Remove and then reinstall the network stack. This includes the Client for Microsoft Networks component, the File and Printer Sharing component, and the TCP/IP protocol.
  4. Install an updated driver for your network adapter.
  5. Replace the network adapter.
