APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Rise of Nations

SYMPTOMS

When you update Microsoft Rise of Nations, you may receive the following error message or an error message that resembles the following:

Invalid patch file error
Patch Error Return Code Positive 32769

CAUSE

To keep the download size to a minimum, the Rise of Nations updates are mostly a delta update. A delta update contains the differences that are found between newly versioned and original files. If the installed files have become damaged or modified before the update, Rise of Nations is unable to successfully modify the file because the contents of the file differ from the expected contents.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the following methods in the order that they are presented.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Disable the antispyware program

This issue may occur if an antispyware program such as Spysweeper is installed. Try disabling this software before you start the game update. See the documentation that was included with the software documentation for steps to disable the software.

Method 2: Remove Rise of Nations

  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Rise of Nations, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. Click Uninstall, and then click OK.

Method 3: Restart the computer by using a clean boot procedure

When you start Microsoft Windows, typically there are several programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the game. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean boot, you prevent these programs from starting automatically.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

To restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure, follow these steps if you are using Microsoft Windows XP:

Note You may experience a temporary loss of some services functionality when you follow these steps. Restoring the settings restores the functionality. However, the original error message or behavior may return.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  3. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Process SYSTEM.INI File
    • Process WIN.INI File
    • Load Startup Items
  4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

To perform a clean boot procedure, click the Play button to view this streaming media demonstration.
To return from a clean boot state, click the Play button to view this streaming media demonstration.
