SYMPTOMS

No network printer notifications appear even though the Show informational notifications for network printers check box is selected.

CAUSE

The HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings\EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote registry sub-key is not created when Microsoft Windows XP is installed. By default, the check box is initially selected.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Click to clear, and then click to select the Show informational notifications for network printers check box. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.
  2. On the File menu, click Server Properties.
  3. In the Print Server Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then click to clear the Show informational notifications for network printers check box.
  4. Click to select the Show informational notifications for network printers check box, and then click OK.

Note When you click to clear, and then click to select the Show informational notifications for network printers check box, Windows creates the following two registry sub-keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings\EnableBalloonNotificationsLocal
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings\EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote

Method 2

Create the Registry sub-keys manually. To do this, follow these steps:

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In Registry Editor, locate the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Printers\Settings sub-key.
  4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  5. Type EnableBalloonNotificationsLocal, and then press ENTER.
  6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
  7. Type EnableBalloonNotificationsRemote, and then press ENTER.
  8. Double-click the entry that you created in step 7.
  9. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 1, and then click OK.
  10. On the File menu, click Exit.
