SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge (ExMerge) to migrate a mailbox, some of the contact items are not imported correctly when the personal folder (.pst) file is merged into the target store. This problem occurs when you migrate from a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 organization to a Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 organization. When you view the ExMerge log file (Exmerge.log), error events that are similar to the following are logged:

[10:32:39] Merging data from file 'C:\EXMERGE\SHESSE.PST' to mailbox 'Stefan
Hesse' ('SHESSE') on server 'Exchange_Server_Name'.
[10:33:16] Error copying messages from folder '\Contacts'
(MAPI_W_PARTIAL_COMPLETION)
[10:33:16] Trying to copy messages in folder '\Contacts', individually.
To avoid duplicates in the target store, messages will be merged and not copied into the target store.
[10:33:17] Error copying message with subject 'Kim Ralls' in folder
'\Contacts'. (Unknown Error)
[10:33:17] Error copying message with subject 'Holly Holt' in folder
'\Contacts'. (Unknown Error)

If you try to manually move these contact items to a Microsoft Outlook Contacts folder in an Exchange Server 2003 mailbox, you receive the following error message:

Can't move the items.
