SYMPTOMS
On a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, when you try to connect to a remote network (such as your Internet Service Provider) by using a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) connection (dial-up, PPP over Ethernet (PPoE), or virtual private network(VPN)), the connection fails because the authentication is not successful.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if both of the following conditions are true:
- The network connection uses Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) compulsory tunneling.
- Your PPP connection is configured to use Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) as the authentication method.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, do either of the following:
- Use Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) as your authentication method.
- Use Microsoft Windows XP instead of Windows 2000. This problem does not occur when you use Windows XP with a PPP connection that is configured to use CHAP authentication.
