SYMPTOMS

When you start a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer while you have a removable disk device that contains media connected to the computer, or after you insert media into the removable disk device, Windows 2000 may crash, and then you receive one of the following "Stop" error messages:

STOP 0x000000D1 (0xffffff20, 0x00000002,0x00000000, 0xbfe5d810)

STOP 0x000000C4 (0x00000013, 0x00000fb6, 0x88efb2c0, 0x00000000)

STOP 0x00000050 (0xff391000, 0x00000001, 0x804d1017, 0x00000000)

STOP 0x0000000A (0x00000004, 0x0000001c, 0x00000001, 0x804324ac)

Note The parameters for each of these Stop codes may vary.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the removable disk device uses a sector size that is greater than the Windows memory page size of 4,096 bytes (4 kilobytes [KB]). If there is a disk in the removable drive, Windows reads some of the disk as it searches for a boot sector or for file system information. The first instance of access to sector zero causes a "Stop" error to occur, because the sector size exceeds the memory size that is allocated to read sector zero.

Note Most removable devices have a sector size of less than 4,096 bytes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, remove or disable the removable disk device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article.
