SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you may find that it takes a longer time to create a new Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site on a portal site as the number of Web sites on the portal site increases. For example, you may experience symptoms that are similar to the following:
- When there is only one site in the database, it may take approximately one second or less to create a new Web site.
- When there are 10,000 Web sites in the database, it may take approximately two seconds or more to create a new Web site.
- When there are 25,000 Web sites in the database, it may take approximately five seconds or more to create a new Web site.
- When there are 50,000 Web sites in the database, it may take approximately twelve seconds or more to create a new Web site.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if there is a very large number of Web sites on the portal site. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 creates a list of Web sites that are associated with the portal site. As the number of Web sites increases, it takes a longer time for SharePoint Portal Server to return the list of the Web sites that are stored in the database.
RESOLUTION
This problem was first fixed in a hotfix that is now contained in a service pack. If you installed the latest SharePoint Portal Server 2003 service pack, you do not have to install the hotfix.
