SYMPTOMS
Microsoft SQL Server 2000 may start generating slower query plans in SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) if the following conditions are true:
- The query contains an OUTER JOIN operator, and a view is used as the inner table of the outer join. (The view is the right table of a left join or the left table of a right join.)
- The view specifies an expression in its SELECT list, such as an arithmetic operation, a CONVERT operator, or another function.
- The view does not use DISTINCT, TOP, or GROUP BY operators or any aggregate operators, such as COUNT(*).
This problem is a regression from a SQL Server 2000 SP3 fix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
321541 FIX: SQL Server might return incorrect results when you use an outer join and a view
The fix changes the tree structure that the SQL Server query optimizer receives when the parser operates on a query that contains a view that meets the previously described conditions. Because of this change, the SQL Server query optimizer cannot use the available statistics from the base table that is specified in the view. As a result, the cardinality estimates are different, and this difference may affect the execution plan that you choose.
