Live Communications Server error message when you try to enable or disable the IM Archiving Agent or when you try to change its properties

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to your computer as a local Administrator and try to enable or disable the IM Archiving Agent, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Live Communications Server Snap-in cannot set module state. Restart Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI), and then try again.

When you log on to your computer as a local Administrator and try to change the Stop Live Communications Server when failing to archive setting in the IM Archiving Agent Properties dialog box, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Live Communications Server Snap-in cannot save some or all of the settings.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because local Administrators are not granted the Send Message permission for Message Queuing (also known as MSMQ). When the IM Archiving Agent is enabled or is disabled or when its settings change, the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider always validates the Message Queuing path name by opening the queue for Send Message, and the validation fails.

RESOLUTION

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

To resolve this issue, do one of the following:

• Log on to your computer as a domain Administrator to manage the IM Archiving Agent.
• Grant Send Message permission to the local Administrators group when you log on to your computer as a domain Administrator. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
  2. In the left pane, expand Services and Applications, and then expand Message Queuing.
  3. Expand Private Queues, right-click msmq, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab.
  5. In the Group or user names list, select Administrators.
  6. In the Permissions for Administrator list, click to select the Send Message check box for the Allow column, and then click OK.
• Log on to your computer as a local Administrator, take ownership of Message Queuing, and then grant the Send Message permission to the local Administrators group. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
  2. In the left pane, expand Services and Applications, and then expand Message Queuing.
  3. Expand Private Queues, right-click msmq, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
  5. Click the Owner tab, and then click Other Users or Groups.
  6. Click Advanced, and then click Find Now.
  7. In the Search results list, click Administrators, and then click OK three times.
  8. Click Add, click Advanced, and then click Find Now.
  9. In the Search results list, click Administrators, and then click OK two times.
  10. In the Group or user names list, click Administrators.
  11. In the Permissions for Administrator list, click to select the Send Message check box in the Allow column, and then click OK.
