You Cannot Stop or Restart the Live Communications IM Archiving Service When You Are Logged On as an RTC Local Administrator

Article ID: 830226

Article Last Modified on 10/9/2003

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to stop or start the IM Archiving Service in Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Could not stop the Live Communications IM Archiving Service service on Local Computer.

Error 5: Access is denied.

This behavior occurs even though your user account is a member of the RTC Local Administrators security group on the local computer. You can successfully stop and start the Live Communications Server service on the local computer.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if one of the following conditions exist:

  • You log on to the local server computer (not the domain) by using an account that is a member of the RTC Local Administrators security group on the local server but that is not a member of the Power Users local security group or the Administrators local security group.

-or-

  • You log on to the domain by using a domain account that is a member of the RTC Local Administrators security group on the local server but that is not a member of the Power Users local security group or the Administrators local security group.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, add the user account to the Power Users security group or the Administrators security group on the local server computer.
