  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Ntbackup utility (Ntbackup.exe) to back up the system state of a Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based or a Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server-based computer, the system state option may not be available in Ntbackup.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the user who uses Ntbackup does not have both the Back up files and directories and Restore files and directories user rights on the local computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, grant user rights for the current user or group that the user belongs to for the Backup files and directories policy and the Restore files and directories policy. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Administrative Tools.
  2. Double-click Domain Security Policy.
  3. Expand Security Settings, expand Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.
  4. Double-click Back up files and directories, and then locate the user who you want to use to back up the system state, or the group that user belongs to in the Security Policy Setting dialog box, and then click to select the Define these policy settings check box.

Locate any groups that the user is a member of that do not have the rights to Backup files and directories and Restore files and directories.

You can use the Group Policy Results tool to display information about group policies.

For additional information about the Group Policy Results tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  5. Double-click Restore files and directories, and then locate the user who you want to use to back up the system state, or the group that user belongs to in the Security Policy Setting dialog box, and then click to select the Define these policy settings check box.
  6. When you assign the necessary user rights, you must manually update the policy by typing the following command at the command prompt to immediately impose Group Policy object settings located in the "machine node" of relevant Group Policy objects:

    SECEDIT /REFRESHPOLICY MACHINE_POLICY /ENFORCE

For additional information about how to force a Group Policy update immediately by using Secedit.exe, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  7. Log off, and then log back on to the computer and back up the system state.
