SYMPTOMS
On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), the following two events may appear repeatedly in the system log of Event Viewer:
Event Source: Disk
Event Category None
Event ID: 32
Date: date
Time: time
Event Type: Warning
Description: The driver detected that the device \Device\Harddisk2
\DR2
has its write cache enabled. Data corruption may occur.
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: date
Time: time
Event Type: Warning
Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2
\DR2
during a paging operation.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if you have installed one or more storage devices that do not support cache commands. The Windows 2000 SP4 Disk.sys driver writes many events to the system log when it performs write operations to a storage device that does not support cache commands.
Some storage devices do not support cache control commands, such as the WRITE command when it is used with the ForceUnitAccess option or the MODE SELECT command that is used to change the cache. While Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) also logs events in the system log when it accesses a storage device that does not support cache commands, Windows 2000 SP3 writes these events only when it first accesses the device. However, Windows 2000 SP4 writes many warning events to the system log every time that it accesses the device that does not support cache commands.
