SYMPTOMS

When Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 receives a message from a foreign X.400 system, the Exchange Server computer may send a non-delivery report (NDR) in reply, and the message may not be delivered successfully.

The Exchange Server 5.5 message transfer agent (MTA) may log a conversion error event that is similar to the following:

An internal MTA error occurred. Content conversion for message message ID failed. Conversion error: 4096, Object at fault: 06000222, Original content type: 2A864886F7140501, New content type: 56010A00. PDU dump reference 854 [MTA DISP:FANOUT 30 112] (14)

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the message is sent by using a code page that is not supported by the message transfer agent. Code pages for Eastern European languages that use the Cyrillic alphabet may cause this problem.
