SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to download and install updates to administrative installations of Microsoft Office 2003. This method requires the following items:

  • An edition of Office 2003 that is compatible with the Custom Installation Wizard and other administrative tools (retail editions of Office 2003 do not support these tools).
  • Sufficient network capacity to handle re-caching and reinstalling Office throughout an organization.

For information about how to install updates on client computers, see the "References" section of this article.

Download the Administrative Update

To download an update for an administrative installation of Office 2003, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the appropriate Web site to download the update. For Office 2003 administrative updates, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click the link to download the file that you want.
  3. Click Save this program to disk, and then click OK.
  4. Click Save.
  5. In Windows Explorer, double-click the file that you downloaded. When you are prompted to extract the contents of the update to a new folder, click Yes.

Install the Administrative Update

To install the administrative update, follow these steps.

Notes

  • You must run this command from a computer that already has Windows Installer installed.
  • Before you update an administrative installation point, make sure that no clients are using the share. If a file on the share is in use during the upgrade process, a newer version of that file is not copied to the administrative installation point.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:

    msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p c:\adminupdate\MSP file SHORTFILENAMES=1

In this command, replace admin path with the path of your administrative installation point for Office 2003 (for example, C:\Office2003), replace MSI file with the MSI database package for the Office 2003 product (for example, Pro11.msi), and replace MSP file with the name of the administrative installation update.

    Notes

    • If admin path or the path of the MSP file contains a space, you must enclose the path with quotation marks (for example, "C:\Office2003 Admin").
    • You can add the /qb+ switch to the command line to avoid receiving the Office 2003 Administrative Installation dialog box and the End User License Agreement dialog box.
  2. In the Microsoft Office 2003 Administrative Installation dialog box, click Next.

Note Do not change your CD key, the installation location, or your company name in the Microsoft Office 2003 Administrative Installation dialog box.
  3. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Install.
  4. If the update contains multiple MSP files, or if you want to apply multiple updates to your administrative installation, repeat steps 1 through 2 for the remaining MSP files.

After you follow these steps, your administrative installation point is updated. Next, you must update the workstations that were originally installed from this administrative installation. To do this, see the "Update Your Workstations" section later in this article. Any new installations that you run from this administrative installation point will include the updates.

Note Any workstation that was installed from this administrative installation point before you installed the updates cannot use this administrative installation point for actions such as repairing Office or adding new features until you complete the steps in the "Update Your Workstations" section of this article for the workstation.

Update Your Workstations

To update your workstations, use one of the following methods:

  • Run Setup.exe from the updated administrative installation point to interactively update a workstation.
  • Use the following method to update workstations where Office 2003 was already installed from your administrative installation point. You must follow these steps for each workstation.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:

      msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=feature list REINSTALLMODE=vomus

In this command, replace admin path with the path of your administrative installation point for Office 2003 (for example, C:\Office2003), replace MSI file with the MSI database package for the Office 2003 product (for example, Pro11.msi), and replace feature list with the list of feature names (case sensitive) that must be reinstalled for the updates.

For more information about feature names, see the "References" section later in this article.

To install all features, you can use the REINSTALL=ALL property setting.
    2. When you are notified that Setup completed successfully, click OK.
    3. If you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

How to Apply Multiple Updates to Workstations

As stated earlier in this article, you can apply multiple updates to the administrative installation point at the same time and then update the workstations one time for all the updates. To do this, you can follow the steps in the "Update Your Workstations" section of this article. You can combine all the feature names for the REINSTALL property, or you can include all the features by using the following command line:

msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

In this command, replace admin path with the path of your administrative installation point for Office 2003 (for example, C:\Office2003), and replace MSI file with the MSI database package for the Office 2003 product (for example, Pro11.msi).
