APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Windows server environment that is running the Services for UNIX component, a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer that functions as a Network Attached Storage computer may disconnect from a Windows 2000 Server domain controller that is running Network Information Service (NIS). Therefore, none of the account lookup functions on an NIS server run successfully.

Note The LookupAccountName() and the LookupAccountSid() functions are examples of account lookup functions.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the security channel between the Network Attached Storage computer and the domain controller has been dropped. The security channel may be dropped if either of the following conditions is true:

  • An account lookup function is the only communication between the domain controller and the Network Attached Storage computer.
  • The activity counter for the connection between the computer that calls the account lookup function and the domain controller is not correctly updated.

When the security channel between the Network Attached Storage computer and the domain controller is dropped, the Services for UNIX component stops working.
