"Failed to Connect to the Database" Error Message When You Connect to the Microsoft Operations Manager Database Through a Firewall

Article ID: 828780

Article Last Modified on 10/27/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

When you use the MOM Administrator console to remotely connect to a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) database, you may receive the following error message:

Failed to connect to the database on database server name.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you try to connect to the MOM database through a firewall from a remote computer, and the port for the connection to the MOM database is blocked. By default, the computer that runs Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and contains the MOM database uses port 1433 to receive data from the Database-Consolidator-Agent Manager (DCAM) server and for MOM Microsoft Management Console (MMC) connections. You cannot make these connections if this port is blocked.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, open port 1433 on the firewall or reconfigure SQL server to communicate over a port that is available on the firewall. To reconfigure SQL communications, follow these steps:

  1. On the SQL server that contains the MOM database, modify the port that the SQL server uses.

  2. On the DCAM server, you must install the SQL Client Utilities, and then use the SQL Client Network Utility to configure the port to send data to the SQL server.
