SYMPTOMS

When you use the Backup utility in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or in Microsoft Windows 2000 Server to back up the Exchange 2000 information store, the following error message is logged to the Backup.log file:

Backup Type: Incremental

Backup started on Date at Time.
WARNING: Portions of "\Log Files" cannot be read. The backed up data is corrupt or incomplete.
This file will not restore correctly.
Backup completed on Date at Time.

As a result, the incremental backup operation does not complete successfully.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you back up the information store by using the following steps in the order that they are presented:

  1. Perform a normal (full) backup.
  2. Perform an incremental backup.
  3. Perform an incremental backup.
  4. Perform an incremental backup.
  5. Perform a copy backup.
  6. Perform an incremental backup.

In this situation, the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) component does not correctly process the incremental backup operation in step 6, and you experience the symptoms that the "Symptoms" section of this article describes.
