SYMPTOMS
When you click Add/Remove Windows Components in the Add or Remove Programs tool to add or remove a Microsoft Windows component by using the Windows Components Wizard, you may find that Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) (WMSDE) Setup unexpectedly starts, and you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
When you try to access your Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site after you click OK on the error message, you receive the following error message:
Additionally, when you view the list of currently installed programs in the Add or Remove Programs tool, the entry for WMSDE appears as Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (SharePoint)(SharePoint).
CAUSE
This issue may occur if the following conditions are true, in the order that they are presented:
- You log on to server as a user who has administrator credentials and install Windows SharePoint Services and WMSDE on the server by using the Typical Installation option.
- You log off the server.
- You (or another user) logs on to the server as a different user (who has administrator credentials) and use the Windows Components Wizard in the Add or Remove Programs tool to add or remove a Windows component.
In this situation, WMSDE tries to reconfigure itself for the new user, and Windows SharePoint Services is disconnected from the configuration database.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, stop and restart the WMSDE SQL Service. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Control Panel, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Component Services.
- Click Services on the left pane of the Component Services window.
- Right-click the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service on the list in the right pane, and then click Stop.
- Right-click the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service on the list in the right pane, and then click Start.
- Close the Component Services window.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
