User Must Be a Member of the Local Users Group in Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 5

Article ID: 827680

Article Last Modified on 10/27/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0 Service Pack 5

SUMMARY

New in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5), domain users must be a member, either directly or indirectly, of the local Users security group on a computer where the SMS client software is installed. In SMS Service Pack 4 (SP4) or earlier, the Everyone security group gives the correct credentials for the SMS client software to function correctly.

MORE INFORMATION

Users of Microsoft Windows 2000 do not experience this issue because logged-on users automatically become members of the Authenticated Users group. The Authenticated Users group is a member of the Local Users group.

The Authenticated Users security group does not exist in Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. By default, the Domain Users security group is not added to the Local Users security group. On computers where the Authenticated Users group or the Domain Users group is not added to the Local Users group, the SMS client software does not have the correct credentials to use some registry keys. Changed credentials can affect the following SMS client functions:

  • Installation
  • Software and Hardware inventory
  • Software distribution
