APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

You may experience symptoms that are similar to the following when you use a 16-bit MS-DOS-based communications program after you upgrade Microsoft Windows 2000 to Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3):

  • The communications program completes a dial-up connection to another computer, but the data transmission is unsuccessful.
  • If you retry the connection, the communications program completes the data transmission successfully.
  • If you replace the Windows 2000 SP3 NTVDM.exe file with an earlier version, the problem is resolved.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the NTVDM.exe program that is included with Windows 2000 SP3 does not correctly initialize a particular variable before use. Therefore, an initial communications connection may be unsuccessful because a character may be truncated from the data transmission.
