APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

Consider the follow scenario:

  • You are using a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.
  • You use the Defense Messaging System (DMS) program to send a signed or encrypted message to a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address.
  • The message contains an attachment that is larger than 500 KB.

In this scenario, the message takes a long time to be delivered to the recipient.

CAUSE

DMS uses the XEXCH50 command to relay certain message properties, such as envelope, message, and recipient properties. The XEXCH50 command is a Microsoft Exchange extension that is supported by SMTP. An XEXCH50 command that has received a success type response is then followed by a binary large object (BLOB) of variable size.

This problem occurs because signed or encrypted messages that contain attachments that are larger than 500 KB create large BLOBs. These BLOBs block the SMTP route for a short time.
