SYMPTOMS

Your Microsoft Windows 2000-based server may intermittently stop responding, and an event that is similar to the following is logged in the system event log:: Event ID: 54
Source: NPFS
Description: An IO Request to the device \Device\NamedPipe did not complete or canceled within the specific timeout. This can occur if the device driver does not set a cancel routine for a given IO request packet.


CAUSE

This problem may occur in the Named Pipes File System (NPFS) if the following conditions are true:

  • A program requests an operation to be performed (for example, a read operation).
  • NPFS obtains a shared lock on a Volume Control Block (VCB) and then obtains an exclusive lock on the same VCB to complete the operation.
  • The operation is canceled by the program that requested the operation.
