SYMPTOMS
When you use the Active Directory Installation Wizard to install Active Directory on the member server, or when a domain controller replicates another domain controller, you receive the following error message:
If you use Event Viewer, you see that the following event is logged:
Event ID: 1168
Source: NTDS General
Type: Error - 11073741823(c0000001) has occurred. (Internal ID 3000b35) Please contact Microsoft Product Support for assistance.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when an NTDS Settings object from a domain controller that has had Active Directory removed is still present as a child of the server object in Active Directory Sites and Services. When this behavior occurs, the NTDS Settings object is known as orphaned. When you try to install Active Directory on the member server, or when you try to replicate a domain controller, the orphaned NTDS Settings object interferes with your attempt, and you receive the error message.
