You cannot access voice mail messages from your Exchange 2000 mailbox when you call in to retrieve your messages

Article ID: 825193

Article Last Modified on 10/26/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

SYMPTOMS

Occasionally, when you call in to access your voice mail messages from a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server mailbox, you cannot retrieve your voice mail messages. When you call in to collect your voice mail messages, you may hear nothing at all, or you may hear the following announcement:

I'm sorry. There is a problem with the system.

Also, when a caller tries to leave a voice mail message, they may not be able to do so. Callers may hear a simulated greeting instead of the pre-recorded personal greeting of the person who they are trying to call.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if all the following conditions are true:

  • You use Avaya Unified Messenger to access your voice mail messages from your Exchange 2000 mailbox.
  • There are multiple Exchange 2000 computers on the network that host Exchange mailboxes.
  • At least one of the Exchange 2000 computers that hosts mailboxes becomes unavailable.

In this scenario, when you call in to access your voice mail messages, the MAPI call from the server that runs Avaya Unified Messenger to the Exchange 2000 computer that hosts your mailbox may be blocked. Although the Exchange 2000 computer that hosts your mailbox is available, this problem occurs because the connection to the available Exchange server is blocked by another thread that is trying to access the unavailable Exchange 2000 Server.
