SUMMARY
When you start a virtual machine that is set to use your Macintosh computer's Ethernet connection and that uses Virtual Switch for network connectivity, a kernel panic of Mac OS X 10.1.2 may occur if the Ethernet cable is not plugged-in.

If you use Mac OS X 10.1.2, use Shared Networking instead of Virtual Switch. If you must have the functionality of Virtual Switch, use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the network.
Make sure that the Ethernet cable is plugged in to your computer and that Mac OS X recognizes that the network connection is usable. You can verify the connection by using Mac OS X Network System Preference or by using a network-based program (other than Virtual PC). Resolve any network connectivity issues, and then restart the virtual machine that uses the Macintosh Ethernet network connection.
If you use Mac OS X 10.1, 10.1.1, or 10.1.3 or later, you do not experience this behavior. For best results, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later.
