Dialpad is a product made by Dialpad Communications, Inc. With it, you can use your computer to make telephone calls. Dialpad works with Virtual PC if you set up Virtual PC correctly. To resolve most of the issues with Dialpad, you can disable shared networking in the Virtual PC preferences.

To use Dialpad:

1. Verify that your Macintosh computer has the correct input device selected in the Mac Sound Control Panel:
   • For Mac OS X, click the Apple menu, click System Preferences, and then click Sound.
   • For Mac OS 9, click the Apple menu, click Control Panels, and then double-click Sound.
   Note On some Macintosh computers, when you use a modem, the operating system switches the input device to the modem. As a result, you hear the modem dial and connect. You may have to switch the input device back to the Microphone after you dial.
2. Disable shared networking :
   1. In Virtual PC, click Edit, click "Name of Virtual Machine" Settings, and then click Networking.
   2. Click to clear the Enable networking check box, and then click OK.
   Note Dialpad cannot work through a private network. Shared IP is a form of private network.
3. Configure Virtual PC to connect to the Internet independently of the Macintosh computer:

   • For a Local Area Network (LAN) or Ethernet connection, switch from TCP/IP to AppleTalk (MacIP). This setting permits Virtual PC easier access to the network card because the Macintosh computer ignores most TCP/IP traffic when you set it to AppleTalk (MacIP):
     
     In Mac OS X:
     1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.
     2. Click Network, and then click Built-in Ethernet in the Show menu.
     3. Click the AppleTalk tab, click to select the Make AppleTalk Active check box, and then click Apply Now.

     In Mac OS 9:

     1. Click the Apple menu, and then click Control Panels.
     2. Double-click TCP/IP, and then click AppleTalk (MacIP) in the Connect via: menu
     3. Close the TCP/IP dialog box, and then click Save

Note You must assign Virtual PC real IP addresses. For example, if you use a DSL modem to connect to the Internet, you must assign the IP address, DNS, and Gateway in Windows, and not use a router or internal IP LAN addresses such as the 10.0.0.1 range of IP addresses.
